The default scale
Every school starts with GES-style A–F banding:
Edit any of it — the grade letters, the boundaries, the labels and the points are all yours to set.
Different scales for different sections
A school can run more than one scale. Early years are commonly graded descriptively while JHS runs GES points, and the two need not share bands. A scale that names no particular programme applies to any class that has no more specific scale of its own.Bands must cover the range
Bands run from 0 to 100 and should meet without gaps or overlaps. A percentage that falls in a gap has no grade to be given, and a percentage in an overlap has two.Where grades are used
